It’s time to look at the final four players on the Browns’ roster heading into training camp; Part 2 of our safety preview sees an explosion of four rookies, all of whom you have probably never heard of.

5. Montrel Meander - Undrafted Free Agent Safety

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 215 lbs | Age: 23
Experience: Rookie | College: Grambling State

The Browns signed Montrel Meander as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. Meander was accused of sexual assault in 2015, but the case was dropped. Last year was his first as a defensive back after converting from wide receiver, and he registered 49 tackles and 2 interceptions for Grambling State.

According to Meander, his phone started ringing with multiple teams contacting him during the fifth round of this year’s draft. He believes his Pro Day in March, “where he ran a 4.4 40-yard dash with a 10-5 broad jump and a 37-inch vertical jump,” put him on the radar of NFL teams. You can see some of his college highlights here:

6. Micah Hannemann - Undrafted Free Agent Safety

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 195 lbs | Age: 23
Experience: Rookie | College: BYU

The Browns couldn’t afford to have two BYU safeties on the roster at the same time, so out went Kai Nacua and in came Micah Hannemann. An undrafted free agent, Hannemann signed with the Browns after this year’s draft.

He started the past three years at BYU, the last two of which were at safety. He has good speed with a 4.57 40-yard dash and also returned punts. Our college affiliate praised his athleticism; he logged 123 tackles, 4 interceptions, 14 passes defended, and 1 forced fumble in college.

7. Elijah Campbell - Undrafted Free Agent Safety

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 190 lbs | Age: 22
Experience: Rookie | College: Northern Iowa

Of all the positions on the roster, the Browns really used their undrafted free agent pool to load up on the safety position. In an interview with Draft Diamonds, Elijah Campbell said that the player he tries to mimic his game after is Tyrann Mathieu.

In 2016, he registered 42 tackles and 3 interceptions as a safety. Last year, Campbell switched to cornerback and finished with 51 tackles, 1 sack, and 5 interceptions. His ball skills stand out amidst the crowd, but we will see whether Cleveland envisions him playing safety or cornerback as a rookie.

8. Tigie Sankoh - Undrafted Free Agent Safety

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 214 lbs | Age: 20
Experience: Rookie | College: Greenwich

In May, we learned that the Browns were assigned DB Tigie Sankoh through the NFL’s International Player Development program. Sankoh attended the American Football Academy at Filton College in Bristol, England. He played for the London Warriors in the British American Football League. Through the program, Sankoh will not count against the team’s 90-man roster until final cutdowns are due.

The international program began in 2017 and “aims to provide international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster.” In 2018, teams in the AFC North will each carry their assigned player on the roster through the tend of training camp.

At the end of camp, the Browns will have the opportunity to name Sankoh to their 53-man roster. However, the more likely outcome would involve them taking advantage of the special “international player practice squad exemption” that they will be awarded. That will allow each AFC North team to carry an 11th member on their practice squad, but that player will be ineligible to be activated during the season.
