Corey Coleman asked Hue Jackson to trade him after demotion

There was more going on behind the scenes that prompted Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey to trade Corey Coleman to Buffalo.

Coleman, after apparently being demoted to the second-team offense during practice, stormed into head coach Hue Jackson’s office and questioned the move.

“Why am I running second team?’’ Coleman asked Jackson on the second episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks. “That s—t’s crazy.”

Jackson told the young receiver to ask offensive coordinator Todd Haley for an explanation.

“If y’all don’t want me to play, why don’t y’all just trade me?” Coleman responded before walking towards the door.

Coleman quickly got his wish and was shipped to Buffalo less than 24 hours after that in exchange for a 2020 seventh-round pick, a move I criticized at the time.

Dorsey probably could have done better, but it is increasingly clear how strongly the team wanted to move on from the former first-round pick. Coleman was consistently being lectured by his coaches for dogging routes in practice, and he didn’t ever seem to get the message that the new Browns have no intention of being like the old Browns.

Maybe Coleman will find the “desire” his offensive coordinator kept questioning, but his motivation and drop problems are no longer Cleveland’s problem.

It’s unclear how much Coleman will play when his new team comes to FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday as the Bills and Browns meet in their second preseason game.
