The Cleveland Browns need to get their roster down to 53 players by Saturday at 4:00 PM ET. Some NFL cuts may come in early, so we will begin to track them here in a live blog format. Please feel free to use the comments section to discuss cuts around the NFL who may be of interest to Cleveland.

Scroll to the bottom of this post for a raw list of today’s reported cuts so far.

Browns Roster Cuts Live Blog

4:15 PM: The Browns have announced their initial 53-man roster. You can shift all roster talk to that thread.

3:48 PM: And there’s the trade we heard about yesterday: the Titans have traded WR Taywan Taylor to Cleveland. All we know right now is that it is for a 2020 draft pick. Our post on him is here.

3:10 PM: I had missed this one from Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle: the Browns are waiving CB Robert Jackson, but it sounds like they hope to get him back on the practice squad:

3:07 PM: We’re under an hour away from the cut deadline, and we’ve got one more to report now: OT Brad Seaton. Also on Twitter, Adam Schefter of ESPN says the Browns will release P Britton Colquitt if they can’t find a trade partner for him.

2:48 PM: If my math is correct, then the Browns needed to make 35 roster moves after the final preseason game to get the roster to 53 players. So far, we’ve only heard about 12 players who will be “out,” so 23 players to go is still quite a bit.

2:44 PM: I’ll stop saying the reporter’s name because I’ve already said it like 50 times; but the latest one is that DE Wyatt Ray has been cut. Unrelated, the Packers are cutting QB DeShone Kizer. I feel like every former Browns quarterback from another team is being cut today.

2:30 PM: We’re just an hour and a half away from all cuts being in. Per Jake Trotter of ESPN, OL Kyle Kalis will be waived, and then probably headed to IR:

1:58 PM: Whoa, and here’s our first surprise (although not shocking or anything): the Scottish Hammer will be the Browns’ punter! That means the team will see if they can trade veteran P Britton Colquitt:

1:54 PM: Here is a different one for you: confirmation that a player is making the team: in this case, it is DT Daniel Ekuale, who will be on the team’s initial 53-man roster.

1:52 PM: Let’s quickly catch up on some of the bigger NFL transactions today:

  • The Houston Texans traded DE Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks. In exchange, the Seahawks only gave up a 3rd round pick and two backup linebackers, including former Browns LB Barkevious Mingo.
  • The Bills are cutting RB LeSean McCoy.
  • In wide receiver news, the Vikings are cutting WR Laquod Treadwell, while the Redskins are cutting WR Josh Doctson.

1:49 PM: Some former Browns quarterback news, with both Brian Hoyer and Kevin Hogan being released:

1:33 PM: The person with all the scoops continues to be ESPN’s Jake Trotter, who says that LB Willie Harvey will be waived. No surprises overall, though.

12:19 PM: Browns are cutting tight end Stephen Carlson, according to Nate Ulrich of The Beacon Journal:

11:48 AM: The Browns are cutting WR Ishmael Hyman, who had some good moments in camp, but also some key drops in the final preseason game:

10:15 AM: And we are off and running as Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle reports that the Browns have released safety J.T. Hassell:

8:40 AM: Good morning, Browns fans — it is cutdown day in the NFL! Cuts are due in at 4:00 PM ET today. Cleveland did not end up officially announcing any cuts on Friday, so they might all come in one batch today. Our live blog continues throughout the day.

5:55 PM (Friday): Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but Browns fan @Reflog_18 on Twitter is getting rumors that the Browns might be looking to acquire WR Taywan Taylor from the Tennessee Titans. If a trade happened, the timing would be a bit funny, since Cleveland plays the Titans in Week 1.

5:25 PM (Friday): Jake Trotter from ESPN is keeping busy as he reports the Browns have released offensive tackle Brian Fineanganofo:

5:05 PM (Friday): The Browns took care of one of the decisions at quarterback via a trade, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that David Blough is heading to the Detroit Lions along with an exchange of seventh-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft:

Blough was originally signed this year as an undrafted free agent. He had a decent enough preseason, at least to the liking of the Lions, as he 25-of-43 passes for 271 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. We have an article up on the trade here.

3:19 PM (Friday): Once again, per Jake Trotter of ESPN, the Browns are waiving DT Brian Price:

2:24 PM (Friday): So...should we read anything into this tweet by WR Antonio Callaway? The tone of “thankful for the Browns” and “what’s about to happen to me” would seem to imply something. Oh, but never mind, he quickly followed it up with a second tweet saying “let’s work, Dawg Pound!”

2:18 PM (Friday): Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens has been meeting with the media. Here are a couple of nuggets he mentioned related to roster cuts:

  • Rookie OG Drew Forbes has a “minor knee injury,” but they didn’t have a timetable on how long he’ll be out.
  • Kitchens has been meeting with GM John Dorsey and company since 4:00 AM in discussing how to get the roster to 53 players. Dorsey and Kitchens will both be informing players who are being let go.
  • OG Wyatt Teller passed his physical, so he’s a member of the Browns. Kitchens’ instinct is that OG Eric Kush would start in Week 1, with Teller providing competition after that once they get to see him on the field.
  • It’s hard to make a roster decision on a guy like WR Damion Ratley, who was injured most of camp, but who they also like.

2:12 PM (Friday): Per Ian Rapaport of NFL.com, the Browns are waiving S Montrel Meander:

1:57 PM (Friday): Or first Browns-related news of the day is in. Per Jake Trotter of ESPN, the Browns are waiving DE Jarrell Owens.

1:52 PM (Friday): Per Zac Jackson of The Athletic, the Browns could be interested in this guy as their fullback. But again, if he hits waivers, that’s 16 other teams in front of Cleveland.

11:00 AM (Friday): Speaking of the waiver wire, the Browns are basically in the middle of the NFL (17th) in terms of their priority in claiming players. That’s one reason why if a “hot” player is going to be waived, you might see if you can trade for him in exchange for a future draft pick or a player swap.

10:50 AM (Friday): It’s awfully quiet right now around the NFL in general, but expect some cuts to start trickling in soon for at least a couple of teams. We’ll make note of anyone who might be attractive to Cleveland — although remember, they don’t have the same waiver priority that used to have.

9:40 AM (Friday): Some cuts from around the NFL are already coming in. Remember the glory days of WR Terrelle Pryor? The Jaguars are releasing him.

9:15 AM (Friday): Good morning, Browns fans! All 32 teams will begin the process of trimming their rosters down to 53 players. Last year, GM John Dorsey trimmed the roster to 72 players around 3:30 PM on Friday, before making the remaining cuts on Saturday just before the deadline.

You can see our final 53-man roster projection here.
