It’s time for our annual off-topic discussion of who will watch the Super Bowl’s lead-out program. FOX has the broadcast rights to Super Bowl 54, and the last time they had an opportunity to air something, they chose to air 24: Legacy in 2017, which got 17.58 million viewers, and the show was not picked up for a second season.
This year, FOX is airing the season 3 premiere of The Masked Singer, a singing competition where celebrities are dressed in large costumes, making it a mystery as to who they are until the season is over. This is one of those shows where I never watch it religiously, but if I’m flipping channels, I may stop for a quick segment. I can see how the show is entertaining. I will probably tune in at the beginning to see if they do anything special, but I won’t stick around for the whole broadcast.
Reality shows typically do exceptionally well in this slot, except for The World’s Best last year, which sank in ratings. Take a look at how these reality shows have done since 2000:
- 2001: Survivor (CBS, 45.369 million)
- 2004: Survivor (CBS, 33.535 million)
- 2010: Undercover Boss (CBS, 38.654 million)
- 2012: The Voice (NBC, 37.611 million)
- 2019: The World’s Best (CBS, 22.210 million)
