The Dolphins are in a situation that Browns fans are very familiar with, they need a franchise QB. The problem this year is while there are several options beyond Joe Burrow they all come with concerns with how they will perform in the NFL. Looking over the scouting reports there really are 3 choices for them at this point in the draft. Tua Tagovailoa the guy that has won at ever level, has leadership and decision-making skills that are second to none, and an injury history that says you need to make sure your OL is top notch so you can provide him protection. The second choice is Justin Herbert who has prototypical size and can make every throw, but there are questions about his decision making and he has an injury history as well. Finally the team could look to beef up the lines with their choice of the LT’s still on the board or Derrick Brown for the DL.

With all that in mind, it still comes down to having a starting QB and DBNers are very familiar with what happens when you pass on a QB in the top 10 to fill other positions (Carson Wentz, Deshaun Watson, and Patrick Mahomes) so it HAS to be a QB here. My choice for the Dolphins at #5 is Tua Tagovailoa. Tua’s leadership skills and personality make him an ideal candidate to be the face of your franchise and more importantly your leader in the locker room. They guy just wins wherever he has been. He does not have a cannon for an arm, but his arm strength is more than adequate and his decision making skills (one scout noted he had 5 bad decisions in his Alabama career) will make up for it. Flores is used to having a QB that wins with his mind as much as his body during his time in New England and Tua fits that mold. There is a real risk of this being RGIII the 2nd with his injury history, but the upside is just too great to pass on this QB talent.

Pokorny: “The Dolphins have three first-round picks spread throughout the first round, but it wouldn’t feel complete if they didn’t come away with one of the top quarterbacks in this year’s class here.”
