This offseason marked the end of an era with the Chargers as they mutually parted ways with long-time franchise QB Philip Rivers. This means that for the first time since 2004, the Chargers are looking for a quarterback. Tyrod Taylor is currently at the top of the depth chart and though he is a pro, he is not a long term starter at the position. So, the Chargers go with the top remaining QB on the board: Justin Herbert.

Justin Herbert has enormous upside with all the physical tools to be a successful QB; He is very athletic and has a top notch arm. However, Herbert will not likely be a day 1 starter, as he still has much to work on. A more likely scenario is what happened in 2019 with Denver and Drew Lock; roll with the veteran for as much of the season as possible before handing over the reins. For the Chargers this pick is more about 2021 and beyond than 2020.

Pokorny: “The Chargers seem backed into a corner here. They’ve said goodbye to Philip Rivers, so it’s time to look forward to the future. The Chargers hope they aren’t picking as high as No. 6 overall again, but while they’re here, they don’t want to pass on a quarterback until 2021.”
