Grant Delpit, S, LSU

The Browns selected a left left tackle in the first round, and with Queen and Murray off the board, I turned my attention to the safety position. Safety still had a great selection of talent available between Grant Delpit (LSU), Antoine Winfield, Jr. (Minn), Jeremy Chinn (SIU) and Kyle Dugger (LRU).

Being risk averse given the current environment, we went ahead and dropped Chinn and Dugger based on the small school competition they faced. Small school picks do succeed all the time, but with so many options, I will lean towards bigger programs. Winfield would be a good pick here and brings the historical links to make a good story. Delpit, however, is a player who pops off the screen. While he’s been dinged for taking poor angles and some bad tackling, he is rangy and athletic enough to be an effective center fielder and still come up into the box to defend the run if needed. A former lock for the first round, much like last year’s selection, Delpit comes with some risks but also a ton of upside that make him a great value at this spot.
