Get used to seeing a lot of roster moves this season related to the reserve/COVID list. On Monday, the Cleveland Browns announced the following four roster moves:
- P Jamie Gillan has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
- QB Garrett Gilbert has been placed n the reserve/COVID-19 list.
- RB Brian Herrien has been waived.
- S Karl Joseph will begin camp on the Active/PUP list with a foot injury. This is the same list that WR Jarvis Landry is on.
The Browns’ roster now sits at 79 players.
Gillan had COVID-19 in early-to-mid-July, so it’s not a surprise to see him removed from the reserve list so quickly. Seeing Gilbert’s name on the list should be a bit of an eye opener for fans, because imagine that we’re headed into a big regular season game this year and you see Baker Mayfield appear on that list. Cleveland’s decision to sign Case Keenum this offseason is so big right now, to have two capable starting quarterbacks available.
Joseph’s season was cut short in 2019 by a foot injury, so the team is likely letting him take it easy with that — but it’s something to monitor as the weeks go on, and could give the other safeties on the roster a chance to make an impression early.
Herrien was an undrafted free agent out of Georgia who played with Nick Chubb previously, so we won’t get to see the Georgia backfield in camp.
