Using the second overall pick to choose quarterback Zach Wilson, new coach Robert Saleh looks to improve the other side of the ball. Adding Phillips to a defense line, which already has Quinnen Williams and Carl Lawson, will give Saleh a formidable front four comparable to what he had with the 49ers. The only concern is his history of minor injuries and concussions, but his upside is too great to pass on at pick 23.
Pokorny: “If he can get over his injury history, Phillips would be a nice addition to the Jets’ defensive line, and it’s always nice to balance things out with your first round picks going offense & defense.”
