With the 5th pick of the 2021 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select...
Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
The selection and write-up were made by GrandAdmiralThrawn0905:
The Bengals are siting at five and is generally viewed as the first or second team to pick the first non QB player. This draft offers the Bengals some interesting options. Naturally, a team picking so high is the result of the season not going well. In the Bengals case it was a combination of picking first overall the year prior and having that same player that went number one overall getting a season ending injury. What brings this to the extra level of pain is the Bengals fanbase had dealt with a similar story before. Carson Palmer was also a number one overall pick and had numerous injuries that dealt the Bengals that limited the success of the franchise in key moments. Recently we also saw a generational quarterback prospect Andrew Luck whose career was cut short by injuries and having to retire early.
The main goal for Cincinnati entering the offseason was to significantly upgrade the offensive line and make sure what happened to Joe Burrow in 2020 the season-ending injury never occurs again. Burrow was hit more than any quarterback in the league before he was injured, and he was sacked 32 times in 10 games. Upgrading his protection was a clear priority, and they made a move to do it by signing Riley Reiff in free agency. Reiff quickly said he will be playing right tackle though. In the 2020 season, Left Tackle Jonah Williams started 10 games for the Bengals. Prior for that he had a season ending injury during his rookie season. His limited sample size of ten games is not a lot to go off, but I would not pass on a blue-chip Left Tackle prospect.
Thus, with the fifth overall draft pick the Bengals select Penei Sewell.
Luckily for the Bengals the fit and need match up nicely, but there is more to it. Sewell is viewed by most as the best lineman and one of the best athletes in the 2021 class. Sewell opted out of the 2020 season, but he did not allow a single sack in 926 pass attempts during the 2019 season and won the 2019 Outland Trophy, given to the nation’s best interior lineman.
The purpose of an offensive tackle, particularly one that plays on the left side, is to protect the quarterback. Penei Sewell did not give up a single sack in any of his games and the tape I did watch he did not allow many pressures either. He does a great job of moving his feet and anchoring in to get his body in front of defensive linemen. Sewell has a huge frame, quick feet and strong hands. He has the foot quickness to kick out and cover up speed rushers in the passing game. He is just so big that once he gets his arms and hands locked in on you, it is a wrap. You will rarely see an offensive lineman in college be a high-level blocker against the bull rush and the speed guys, but Sewell is an all-around beast. There are really a few knocks on him. He only has one year of college prospect and he did not really face off against star pass rushers which are really more happen stance than actual faults.
Pokorny: “I loved Joe Burrow’s potential last season, but I could see early on that he was going to get killed at some point behind that offensive line. They need to start somewhere for the upgrade, so taking Sewell at No. 5 is the right approach.”
The Miami Dolphins are up next, led by realmccoy.
