The Cleveland Browns began the process of trimming their roster on Monday.

The Browns, along with the other 31 teams in the NFL, must be down to 53 players by Tuesday’s deadline of 4 p.m. EST.

All players that are released must go through waivers and are eligible to be claimed by any other team until 12 p.m. EST on Wednesday. After that, any unclaimed player can be signed and teams will begin to fill out their 16-man practice squads.

The following rules are in place to guide teams in creating their practice squads, according to The Sporting News:

  • All rookies are eligible
  • Players who were on a team’s active roster for fewer than nine regular-season games during their accrued season(s)
  • Teams can sign up to four players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons
  • Teams can sign up to six players with no limitations on their number of accrued seasons

Got all that?

Even though the deadline is not until Tuesday, some roster cuts have started to be announced today, so we will begin to track them here in a live blog format.

Please feel free to use the comments section to discuss cuts around the NFL who may be of interest to Cleveland.

12:49 p.m. - The Browns are releasing defensive tackle Sheldon Day, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network:

Day played well enough during the preseason and was reportedly a favorite of the coaching staff, but the numbers did not work out in his favor at the position. It it will be interesting to see if he resurfaces in Cleveland on the practice squad.

11:32 AM: It is the end of the road for WR KhaDarel Hodge and FB Johnny Stanton, it appears. The team was unable to trade Hodge.

10:35 AM: According to Josina Anderson, the Browns are showing interest in QB Nick Mullens:

Also, Jared Mueller is reporting that Cleveland could be looking to trade either WR KhaDarel Hodge or WR Rashard Higgins to the Patriots for DE Chase Winovich from the Patriots. Mueller has some other roster rumors here.

8:40 AM: Good morning, Browns fans! We have one more cut from yesterday evening to report, and that is OL Colby Gossett:

The Browns needed to make 30 moves after their final preseason game. As of this update, 17 moves have been reported, and we also know that WR Davion Davis will begin the year on the suspension list to make 18 moves. That leaves 9 more moves to go for today.

7:56 p.m. - The Browns will place offensive tackle Greg Senat on injured reserve, according to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

Because they placed Senat on injured reserve today he will not be eligible to return this season. Senat spent time last season on Cleveland’s practice squad.

7:36 p.m. - The Browns are releasing cornerback Manny Rugamba, according to NFL Insider Adam Caplan.

Rugamba was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Miami of Ohio. Rugamba had 151 tackles and four interceptions in his college career and was named Third Team All-MAC in both of his seasons at Miami.

7:03 p.m. - The Browns will be releasing linebacker Willie Harvey Jr., according to Camryn Justice of WEWS:

The Browns signed Harvey earlier this month. He was with the Browns in training camp in 2020, but was released during the final roster cuts and did not catch on with a team.

7 p.m. - The Browns coaching staff may not be as enamored with quarterback Kyle Lauletta as Browns Twitter as the team will reportedly not look to bring him back, according to Mary Kay Cabot at cleveland.com:

6:06 p.m. - It has been a rough day for defensive ends as the Browns are releasing Cameron Malveaux, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

The Browns had signed Malveaux to a reserve/future contract in January after he spent time in 2020 on the team’s practice squad.

6:05 p.m. - The Browns keep trimming at defensive end as they are reportedly releasing Porter Gustin, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

The Browns claimed Markway off waivers last week after he spent 11 weeks on Cleveland’s practice squad in 2020.

4:58 p.m. - Cleveland will be releasing defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

The Browns signed Wilson as an undrafted free agent this spring in a move that got many people excited. Ultimately he was just another early favorite heading into training camp who did not pan out right away. It will be interesting to see if the Browns will be interested and have the opportunity to bring him back to the practice squad.

4:46 p.m. - The Browns are releasing linebacker Tegray Scales, who they signed at the end of last week, according to Mary Kay Cabot at cleveland.com:

Franks spent time on Cleveland’s practice squad last season.

4:37 p.m. - In the first “mild surprise,” the Browns are releasing wide receiver JoJo Natson, according to Mary Kay Cabot at cleveland.com:

Natson joined the Browns as a free agent in 2020 primarily to serve as a return specialist, but saw his season end after three games with an ACL injury.

4:07 p.m. - The Browns have released defensive end Curtis Weaver, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

Weaver was an early favorite in camp after spending the 2020 season in Cleveland’s injured reserve list, but was never able to pull it together on the field this summer.

4 p.m. - NFL reporter Josina Anderson got the ball rolling by reporting that quarterback Kyle Lauletta and safety Sheldrick Redwine are expected to be released:

Lauletta is a player that the Browns will likely look to sign to the practice squad as a developmental quarterback. Lauletta completed 61 percent of his passes in the preseason, with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Redwine, a fourth-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, may not be so lucky. He was injured for much of the preseason, and even when healthy has not done much, as he posted a Pro Football Focus grade of just 41.5 last season, and had the third-most missed tackles on defense.
