Once again, the Cleveland Browns will be starting a practice squad quarterback over a quarterback on their 53-man roster. Earlier this season, when Deshaun Watson’s status was up in the air and Dorian Thompson-Robinson struggled, PJ Walker started over both despite being on the practice squad.
Now, the roles are reversed with Walker on the active roster, along with DTR who is out for Week 13 due to a concussion, but Joe Flacco is being elevated to start at quarterback. The Browns announced the new QB’s elevation on Saturday.
Teams can elevate players three times before they must be on the 53-man roster to play in a game. Technically, Cleveland could elevate Flacco and start him until Week 16 versus the Houston Texans. As of this week, Thompson-Robinson was still considered the starter but Flacco is his backup which could lead to a flop of roster spots between the two veterans.
The Browns also elevated CB AJ Green for Week 13 versus the Los Angeles Rams. This is Green’s third elevation of the season. With CB Denzel Ward out for Sunday, Green helps provide depth in the secondary.
It will be interesting to see what kind of roster adjustments could be made after this week with Green out of elevations and Flacco a spot higher on the depth chart than Walker but still on the practice squad.
