It’s no secret that the Cleveland Browns have been dealing with a plethora of impactful injuries throughout the entirety of the 2023 season so far, and as we all know, it’s taken a big toll on this team.

One of the most important and impactful injuries that the team has been dealing with is at the left tackle position. Jedrick Wills has been out since week 8 and continues to remain on IR with a knee injury that he suffered against the Arizona Cardinals. Shortly before and after Wills’ injury, the team went out and signed offensive tackles Geron Christian, LeRoy Watson, and Justin Murray due to the lack of overall depth at the position. Wills was also playing through a nagging ankle injury at the time so Cleveland already knew that they needed reinforcements on the offensive line as it was.

Christian, whom the Browns signed as a free agent on October 31st, had recently spent time with the Houston Texans earlier this year and performed fairly well. He immediately stood out in practice and became the top option behind Wills at left tackle.

Let’s take a quick look at how Christian’s been performing as the Browns’ starting left tackle over the past four games:

Week 10 - Baltimore Ravens

Total Snaps: 78 (100%)

Pass Block Snaps/Grade: 49 / 72.3

Run Block Snaps/Grade: 29 / 63.1

Overall PFF Grade: 69.6

DBN Grade: B

Week 11 - Pittsburgh Steelers

Total Snaps: 75 (100%)

Pass Block Snaps/Grade: 47 / 45.4

Run Block Snaps/Grade: 28 / 28.2

Overall PFF Grade: 34.1

DBN Grade: D

Week 12 - Denver Broncos

Total Snaps: 72 (99%)

Pass Block Snaps/Grade: 50 / 65.9

Run Block Snaps/Grade: 22 / 54.9

Overall PFF Grade: 57.7

DBN Grade: C

Week 13 - Los Angeles Rams

Total Snaps: 71 (100%)

Pass Block Snaps/Grade: 48 / 68.9

Run Block Snaps/Grade: 23 / 71.1

Overall PFF Grade: 72.1

DBN Grade: A

Christian has consistently put up better overall production and grades than both Jedrick Wills and James Hudson in terms of their performances at Left Tackle in the 2023 season. Though he had a bad game against Denver, he’s been playing at an above-average level since his first start in Week 10 against the Baltimore Ravens:

He’s also coming off his best overall game of the season, especially in terms of run blocking, in which he dominated LA’s star rookie EDGE Byron Young for most of the day.

One of Christian’s best attributes is his ability to re-set on defenders when he gets knocked off balance or gets put in disadvantageous positions in terms of hand fighting. He doesn’t have the quickest feet in the world, but he’s been able to make up for it with his lateral movement and initial hand placement.

Christian has played well enough to make Cleveland think about whether or not he should continue to be the team’s starting left tackle even when Jedrick Wills returns from injury.
