Looking at the defensive snap counts in the Browns' 20-10 loss to the Ravens.

The Browns' defense held the Ravens to just a field goal for three quarters, and even up until near the mid-way point of the fourth quarter, but a couple of deep balls from Joe Flacco turned the tides and helped lead to 17 unanswered. Let's take a look back at the defensive snap counts from Week 17.
Thoughts: Our Week 17 defensive line is always pretty thin, and the veteran Bryant wasn't even utilized to his full capacity for the finale. The returning Hughes seemed to play a factor in stopping the Ravens' running game most of the game, until a couple of big runs in the fourth quarter. Meder will be known as the local kid whose helmet kept coming off.

Thoughts: Sheard played through a foot injury at the end of the season, but part of me wonders if his decline in playing time is a sign that he won't return in 2015. Truth be told, he seemed to have very little impact on the defense this year. Kruger had a big strip sack that Baltimore recovered, but if Cleveland would've been able to get the ball, it could've been a scoop-and-score before the end of the half.

Thoughts: Haden played heroically in the finale, battling both the flu and his shoulder injury. He came away with three passes defended but was beat by the deep ball mid-way through the fourth quarter. Skrine was caught for two touchdowns in the fourth, but neither one was a blown coverage. Williams banged his head on the turf during the game. Desir stepped in briefly and played sound coverage on veteran Steve Smith.

Looking at the offensive snap counts in the Browns' 20-10 loss to the Ravens.

The Browns ran a respectable amount of snaps against the Ravens and actually controlled the clock for the better part of three quarters, but the end result was still a fourth quarter collapse and only ten total points. Check out the snap distributions below for the offense, and let us know what your reactions are in the comments section.

Thoughts: With the team having waived Ray Agnew earlier in the week, the team went without a fullback against the Ravens. After not playing a snap the previous week, West was motivated to return to his native area, had a good week of practice, and got the start. This was as close to a "pure starting role" that we've seen from a back this season with West having 82% of the snaps on a rather productive afternoon.

Thoughts: With Josh Gordon and Miles Austin gone, Benjamin saw reps like a No. 1 receiver. Is that a sign that he will be back in 2015? Smith was targeted on Shaw's interception late in the game.

Jordan Cameron: 3 catches, 41 yards (6 targets).
Jim Dray: No stats registered.
Gary Barnidge: No stats registered.

Thoughts: I had not even realized that Barnidge played a few snaps in his first game back from a rib injury. Cameron had a couple of catches early, but didn't see many opportunities after that. I'd love to see Cameron back, but pricing his contract will be difficult given how much time he missed in 2014.

Connor Shaw: 14-of-28 (50.0%) for 177 yards, 1 interception. 7 rushes, 9 yards, 1 fumble lost.

Thoughts: Shaw did not light the world on fire in his debut, but he looked prepared. He showed a great deal of mobility, and also how that mobility could lead to a big passing play down the field (to Gabriel). This was exactly what everybody hoped Johnny Manziel would have looked like in his first game. That is a tribute to the preparation Shaw put in on the practice squad all year. How many communication problems did he appear to have? I remember one delay of game late in the game and that is it.

That was a good game for about three quarters, and then the wheels came off. The Cleveland Browns headed into the fourth quarter with a 10-3 lead over the Ravens, behind a competent performance from rookie QB Connor Shaw and a solid defensive effort. Baltimore out-scored the Browns 17-0 in the final quarter of play to come out on top 20-10.

Adding salt into the wound is the fact that the victory, coupled with the Chargers falling to the Chiefs, allowed Baltimore to make the postseason as the sixth seed in the AFC. Every team in the AFC North made the playoffs except for Cleveland, who finished the year with a 7-9 record. The Browns were 7-4 at one point but closed out the season with five straight losses.

The offseason is officially underway. A lot of fans would have taken a 7-9 season, but I weigh context into the situation: losing five straight games after being in position for a playoff berth is a huge disappointment, and at this point, our quarterback situation is even more uncertain than it was at the beginning of the 2014 season.

Jump down to the comments section to discuss the Browns vs. Ravens game each quarter with a bunch of other Browns fans!

The Browns put together a lengthy drive to open the second half, but finally had a negative rushing play in Baltimore territory to put them in a tough 2nd-and-15 position, followed by a sack on the next play, and then another sack on third down to force a punt and an end to a promising-looking drive (well, by our standards these days).

Cleveland continued holding strong defensively, forcing another punt in a back-and-forth, 3-3 game. QB Connor Shaw found WR Taylor Gabriel after a scramble on the next drive for 49 yards, and RB Terrance West punched it in from 1 yard out on the next play to give the Browns a 10-3 lead. Baltimore moved the ball into field goal range, but a false start and then stingy defense forced Baltimore to pass up on a 56 yard field goal attempt.

Cleveland owns a 10-3 lead heading into the final quarter of the season. Let's go out with a win, Browns fans!

Jump down to the comments section to discuss the Browns vs. Ravens game each quarter with a bunch of other Browns fans!

While Cleveland's defense continued playing strong at the start of the second half, their offensive miscues continued with a holding penalty on RT Mitchell Schwartz and then a sack given up by LT Joe Thomas before having to punt. The Ravens then moved the ball down the field again, getting into the red zone with a big run by RB Justin Forsett. Cleveland's defense held tough again, holding Baltimore to a 25-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

The Browns next drive got a spark with a shifty 36-yard run by RB Terrance West, a season long run for Cleveland. QB Connor Shaw converted a 4th-and-2 and then improvised on another pass to RB Isaiah Crowell to get down near the 10 yard line. After Shaw took a sack on third down, K Garrett Hartley kicked a 38-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3.

During the Ravens' two-minute drill, the Ravens were knocking on the door of field goal range but OLB Paul Kruger stripped QB Joe Flacco of the ball. Baltimore recovered, but for a net loss of 22 yards, forcing a punt. With a minute to play, the Browns took a knee to go into the half still tied 3-3.

Jump down to the comments section to discuss the Browns vs. Ravens game each quarter with a bunch of other Browns fans!

The Ravens received the ball first but went three-and-out after a couple of Baltimore miscues. QB Connor Shaw was moving the offense with ease on his first drive, but on a 2nd-and-8 in field goal range, there was a bad center-quarterback exchange and Baltimore picked up the loose football. Cleveland's defense forced another three-and-out, but Baltimore's punt went out of bounds at the 8 yard line, pinning the offense back.

Cleveland went three-and-out, and Baltimore drove down to the 1 yard line with a fresh set of downs after a pass interference penalty. The Browns' goal line defense held tough, including when the Ravens went for it on fourth down, to deny Baltimore of a score. Cleveland went three-and-out again, but got a good punt to dig themselves out of bad field position. It's 0-0 as we head to the second quarter of play.
